DOHA: The General Security in Lebanon has said it has received 100,000 Lebanese passports as part of an agreement reached with a contracting company, which was funded by Qatar.

“General Security has received a first delivery of 100,000 passports as part of an agreement concluded with a contracting company, which includes the delivery of 460,000 passports,” it said in a statement, according to Lebanese media. It also thanked Qatar for funding the project, praising its “unwavering support for the Lebanese people and its institutions.”

A report in L’Orient Today, a Lebanese English-language news service, said demand for passports skyrocketed after Lebanon’s economic crisis began in 2019, creating a shortage of travel documents.
“An online platform was created to meet the high demand and reported waiting times quickly reached a year or more. Eventually, General Security decided in 2023 to close the platform and return to an appointment-free application system,” the report said.
