Qataris vote overwhelmingly in favour of constitutional amendments

Qatari citizens have voted overwhelmingly in favour of constitutional amendments in a referendum held on Tuesday, Minister of Interior and Chairman of the General Referendum Committee H E Sheikh Khalifa bin Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani has announced.

He said that the referendum received a popular approval rate of 90.6% of the total valid votes.
In a statement, the Minister explained that 84% of eligible citizens voted in the referendum, with 89% voting in favour of the constitutional amendments, 9.2% not in favour, and 1.8% of votes being invalid.
Voters expressed their approval for replacing the Shura Council elections with nominated seats. A total of 14 constitutional amendments were presented before the voters for their approval.
Sheikh Khalifa bin Hamad Al Thani said that the referendum was conducted with a strong turnout from citizens, pursuant to Decree No. (87) of 2024, which called on citizens to participate in the referendum, in line with the vision of HH the Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani to enhance popular participation in public affairs, strengthen national unity, and contribute effectively to the promotion of consultation, justice, and the rule of law.
The General Referendum Committee commended the widespread participation of citizens in the referendum process.
In conclusion, the committee expressed its gratitude to all entities and national personnel involved in the general referendum process for their effective contributions to organizing and ensuring the success of the referendum, in accordance with constitutional and legal safeguards.
